Top Tips in Saving Your Wedding Dress

December 30, 2011 0 Comments Wedding Planning Tips! by Administrator

Admit it… you spent hours poring over magazines, bridal books, and dress catalogs before you narrowed down your choice to one wedding dress you wanted to wear for your big day. Considering that you’ve spent so much time on selecting the dress of your dreams, don’t you think you ought to do something to make sure that you make it last for as long as possible? Most of the other things that you spend your money on in connection with the ceremony and the celebration (wedding invitations, bonbonnieres, flowers et al) are forgotten after the event is over but the dress is something that you should preserve for as long as possible.

Your beautiful bridal gown is a very fragile garment, considering that it is made of luxurious fabrics such as silk, organdie, net or chiffon. It is also usually in one shade of white or ivory or the other, making it very prone to getting stained. However, you’ll need to ensure that it is stored in the correct manner so that it can be kept as a family heirloom and something that could be passed on to your daughters or granddaughters should they express a desire to wear it when it is their time to walk down the aisle.

Even if you can’t predict whether any future daughters of yours would want to wear it, it is certainly a very important keepsake for you. You could collect all the important memorabilia of that day, including one of your wedding invitations, a sample of the bonbonniere you gave your guests and also pressed flowers that indicated what you used as decorations on that day.

You’ll have to start by send it to the dry cleaners as soon as possible. There are bound to be stains on the dress because of all the food and drink passed around in a wedding. Even if you have been very careful it is quite difficult to avoid stains. Stains caused by red wine, mud, chocolate or grass are notoriously difficult to get rid of and should be attended to at the very earliest, else they will set permanently. In fact, you might not be able to get rid of them without damaging the dress if you try to clean it on your own. Also, you should go to a store that specializes in cleaning wedding dresses because they will know exactly what to do.

You should also buy the right kind of storage supplies in which to store your precious dress away from harsh sunlight. You’ll need acid free or pH-balanced boxes and tissue papers in which to store the dress because regular tissue paper will cause the white or ivory colored dress to be stained over time. Get acid free envelopes as well in order to store the wedding invitations and bonbonnieres in case you plan to store them with the dress because they too can ruin it. If your storage box has a viewing window you’ll also be able to see your dress from time to time without opening it.
